Morning Pages (free writing)

Morning pages. I’ve got to say that this is one of my everyday, non-negotiable practices. I’ve toyed with this practice over the years but it was completing the artist’s way that really got me to see the benefits of doing this. I think that it’s pretty safe to say that incorporating this practice daily has been life changing.

The practice itself is simple. You sit down, as soon as you’ve woken up and write 3 pages. That is it. What happens though is that we create excuses as to why we can’t do this (I certainly did!) and I found barriers, complaints and everything in between that I needed to shake off. The trick, is to play with this until you get the right formula for you. Once you’ve got it, you’re away flying. You can also do this anyway you need. Draw, write, list or prompt your way through. If you write repeated lines of “I don’t know what to write” then so be it. You’ll get through the block when you are ready. Also, make sure you get out of your own way. This is for you and you alone, no one is to read these so be honest! Be real. Be you.

What you need to know:

  • They need to be done first thing in the morning (this is the number one rule)

  • They need to be 3 pages

  • Aim for 2 weeks of doing this daily, I promise that you’ll find it makes an impact

That is it. Grab a pen. Grab a notebook. Get writing.
