Get bougie with your rituals
You do not need to suffer for your practice!
Do you know one of the things that I’ve learnt to embrace the most - stepping into the humour, not to take things so seriously and to really just enjoy the things that I enjoy.
What does this have to do with meditation and mindfulness? Well, leaning into the bougie-ness of my rituals has led me to really prioritise them. It makes them even more ritually!
I think that there is this perception that you can’t enjoy certain things if you are a serious meditator. It’s simply not true. I do think that it’s vital that you know, learn and cultivate a self-sufficient practice (so that you can practice anytime, anywhere if the need pops up - i’ve got plenty of stories that I can share with you on this) but that doesn’t mean that you can’t also have rituals that you love. I’m going to share some of mine.
SCENT THE MOOD
I love scent. Candles, incense, oils, sage & palo santo - I love it. I actually will use different scents for different things. For example, I have a fragrance that I will use in the morning, (citrus is my go-to) one in the afternoon (a gorge woody, warm vanilla or spicy frankincense) and one in the evening (it’s all in the lavender with a hit of orange and sandalwood) . I have a scent that I’ll use when I want to really focus my attention or lighten the mood. What I love about scent is that you can really start to tune your brain to recognise the different activities.
FEEL THE DIFFERENCE
I also have a deep love for my sheepskin. I use this whenever I meditate. Again, it works in a similar way to scent where I’ll see the sheepskin and know that I’m going to meditate, it will often inspire a calming vibe! The benefit of the sheepskin is that I can throw For me, my rituals need to also be comfortable. Yes, I can absolutely practice without support but if I don’t have to, it’s all about the comfort. I also have a meditation chair, which I adore. Over time, my kids know now when the chair comes out that it’s time to meditate, which is a great thing!
I am also particular with the tools I use to write with. I have a journal for my morning pages, one for prompts to clear space in my mind - and both of them I love to write in. I also have pens that I love using. It may seem pedantic but I know if I love what I use then I will prioritise my practices and cement those habits!
SKINCARE ALL THE WAY
I have also started to incorporate some skincare rituals into my practice. Not daily but or certainly not every session but I’ve come to love a gorgeous face mask or a spritz of facial spray. I love the mind / body connection that this gives my practice. One practice that I’ve come to create a daily mindfulness practice with is body oil within my morning and evening routines. It’s a great way to centre and ground myself. Coming back into the body, back into the present. It’s how I will start the day and end the day.
These are just some the ways that I jazz up my rituals. Would you like to hear the brands that I’ve come to adore?
