Can your diet really impact your DNA?

Have you ever heard the saying that you are what you eat? I’ve started to live by this but with a slightly different twist.

You are what you consume

The answer looks like it absolutely is true.

I’ve been fascinated by the impact that my diet has on how I feel for years now. It’s what inspired me to become a health coach and it’s also something that I really dug deep into after having children. One of the best things that I ever did was to work with a Holistic Nutritionist to get my health back (actually, better than ever!).

The food that we eat and what we drink can influence everything from our sleep, energy, mood, libido and it can even touch our genes.

Nature, Nurture + Epigenetics

Interestingly it’s been studying meditation that allowed me to learn about Epigenetics. Our behaviour, lifestyle and our environment all impact the way in which our genes work.

The reason that this is so important is because previously it was thought that the genes that we were born with would determine how our lives played out. For example, if you had a family history of heart disease or obesity then that would get passed now. We are now starting to learn that through a nutrition, mindset and lifestyle, you can actually influence your genes towards a healthier life and even potentially prevent disease by turning genes on and off based on lifestyle cues.

How can you influence your genes?

The is a holistic view. Your sleep, nutrition, movement, relationships and your environment all have an effect on how your genes work.

  • Getting the right amount of sleep

  • Getting regular exercise

  • Maintaining a healthy mindset

  • Being aware of the chemicals, foods, drink that harm your mind and body (think highly processed foods, caffeine, alcohol and even skincare and what we contain our food in!)

  • Self-care (proper rest, creativity, mood boost)

  • Healthy relationships

All of these things will dramatically impact your genes and improve your life. By taking a look at each of these areas of your life you will actually be taking steps to living your best life. From your body, mind, spirit and genes!
